Background Info

I am a single mother who has returned to school. When I was growing up, I was diagnosed with ADD and was exempt from foreign languages due to spelling challenges. Apparently ADD no longer exists without the hyperactivity, so I am now classified as having "other" learning discrepancies with strong discrepancies in spelling and math.
Because foreign languages were waived for me throughout high school, I do not have the required first two sections of a foreign language needed to graduate from my university. When I petitioned to be exempt from this requirement at my university, I was told that the Foreign Language Committee believed that I would be successful at completing these courses or should be able to place out of them by taking a test.
Apparently they weren't listening. Now I am faced with the challenge of taking a class that is not conducive to the schedule of a single mother, or teaching myself another language and passing the placement test.
I have chosen option two. To help me through this journey, I will be using Rosetta Stone's French I and II. Once I start to get the hang of the language, I thought I might find a French tutor to help me in the areas that I am weak in and to practise conversation with.
I am a very determined person, so it will be interesting to see how far I get in this endeavor and how successful I will be. How will I fare in the face of disappointment and, in me case, an extreme disadvantage?
